Protecting a proud maritime tradition with expert cover

Talk to us today

Concentrated along the Cornish coastline and Isles of Scilly, gig rowing is more than just a sport – it’s a living maritime tradition. Rooted in rich history and thriving in communities today, gig clubs embrace heritage, teamwork and seafaring spirit. At Haven Knox-Johnston Specialist and Haven-Knox Johnston Commercial, we’re proud to support Gig clubs, associations and their boats by providing tailored insurance that keeps boats protected, clubs running smoothly and rowers focused on the water, not the paperwork.

What is a Gig boat?
What types of gig boat can we cover?

A gig is a long, narrow, traditional, six-oared wooden rowing boat. It was originally used to ferry pilots out to incoming sailing ships along the Cornish and Isles of Scilly coats or as a shore-based lifeboat that went out to vessels in distress. Today, they’re at the heart of a vibrant and growing water sport.

Gig boats must meet strict specifications that are approved by the Cornish Pilot Gig Association (CPGA). These boats are a decent investment, often handcrafted from Cornish elm or other approved timbers. Gig boats are used for local club training, social rowing, competitive regattas and high-profile events like the World Pilot Gig Championship held in the Isles of Scilly.

Gig boats are built to be strong and seaworthy, but even the sturdiest hulls need protecting. With transport between regattas, weather, storage challenges, and daily use by teams, insurance plays a key role in safeguarding your boat.
